FujiFilm has just announced five new, mostly point and shoot digital cameras with availability starting later this year the new models offer (almost) something for everyone but are probably lacking in low light conditions.

Currently, the name of the game in the compact and ultra-compact point and shoot market is cramming more megapixels onto tiny CCD sensors which only really increases noise and reduces details. Manufacturers should start realizing that there is an “in-between” market that doesn’t want a SLR camera but wants performance equivalent to one.

The Samsung S1050 is one of its newest cameras on the market and has a few features that set it apart from the competition. Ten megapixels for around $200 is almost unheard of, the saying goes, “you get what you pay for†and in this case it may just hold true.

A few years ago, I wouldn’t have even bothered with a Samsung camera but they are coming up in the rankings, they aren’t at the top, I don’t think they ever will be but I’d be surprised if the company won’t make the top 5 at some point. To that it has released two new 8 megapixel cameras under $300.

Pentax might be able to make a decent SLR camera but when it comes to point and shoot models, I question the quality. Companies have just one chance to impress me and Pentax failed on that count, the one and only Pentax point and shoot digital camera I tried was returned for a refund, maybe the company can redeem itself with two new Optio models it just announced.

Casio has been collaborating with Google which owns YouTube to develop digital cameras that capture YouTube optimized video and come with software that can upload the videos to your account with a single click.

General Electric isn’t the first name one thinks of when someone mentions digital cameras. It has decided to enter the digital camera market with several models, the E850 being at the bottom of the E series offering 8 megapixels for $200, it’s almost too good to be true.

Canon’s S-series of cameras have always offered powerful zooms and optical image stabilization. The first model, the S1 is primitive and slow by today’s standards but when it was new, it was the end all be all of superzoom cameras. This tradition is followed up with the latest S-series, the S5IS.

The Pentax K100D and Nikon D40 are both entry level digital SLR cameras. Both offer comparable features and both come in at similar price points. Anyone looking to begin shooting with a digital SLR should look to these two cameras first.
