Highest megapixel camera – Seitz 160 mp
If you’re frustrated by the small size of the prints that you’re able to produce from your shiny new digital camera, it may just be that you need a few more megapixels to play with. If so, Seitz delivers.
With any number of cameras boasting 20 megapixels or better, you’d think that we would be sated for the moment, absolutely buried in pixels. No such luck. In today’s society, bigger is always better, and there is always someone standing ready to produce something very large indeed. So it is with high-end Swiss imaging specialist Seitz, who makes a digital camera with 160, count ‘em, 160 megapixels of gigantic-ism goodness. Take that, Nikon and Canon! Not only does a single image take up almost a gigabyte of disk space, the camera itself sets some new records for a hand-held.
Of course, a gigantic camera with a stupendous number of megapixels also commands a sizable price, in this case starting at around $43,000. According to DP Review, the camera manages to capture images in about 1 second. The company has plans to produce a camera that will capture a 470 megapixel image in about two seconds. The camera uses a Mac Mini as a storage device, understandable given the size of the images taken and saved. The camera also features 48-bit color depth, which contributes to the final size of the images as well.
The Seitz D3 is just one of the specialty cameras produced by the company. They make a number of digital camera backs of a large capacity and specialize in large image sizes and features like massive panoramic photographs, graphical touch screen display controllers, digital stitching hardware, webcams, and software, all delivering extremely high quality in extremely large sizes. The company also sells a variety of lenses to go along with their somewhat non-standard cameras, enhancing the values of their systems.
