Pentax launches customizable Optio RS1000 point and shoot

Olympus announces all-black version of PEN E-P2 Digital CameraEach year in the fall, as a way to prep the market for the all important winter holiday gift giving season, we see a flood of new point and shoot camera releases. While most of these are very cookie cutter, there are always a couple that are obviously directed at the younger people on your gift list, but the new Pentax Optio RS1000 may be one of the most blatant attempts to capture this market ever.

The camera itself is pretty standard across the board:

  • Ultra slim, lightweight, and pocketable for easy portability.
  • High resolution 14.1 megapixel CCD records outstanding detail for large prints or cropping flexibility.
  • 4X wide angle zoom lens (28-110mm) captures large groups, sweeping landscapes, or distant subjects.
  • Large 3 inch LCD with 230,000 dots of resolution is perfect for composing or reviewing still images and video.
  • Widescreen 720p HD video at 30 frames per second captures the action from moment to moment in sharp detail.
  • Easy to use, powerful automatic shooting modes, including the set-it-and-forget-it PENTAX Auto Picture mode, take the guesswork out of great photography.
  • Fast Face Detection technology for outstanding portraits.
  • Lightweight Li-Ion battery compatibility.
  • Suggested retail price of $149.95 with a release in Oct.

While it’s a perfectly serviceable camera for someone taking party pictures, or shots around school, it’s the interchangeable face plates that obviously speak to the younger set.

The camera comes with a starter kit of face plates you can swap out, but then it also comes with software to make more designs from your own photos, or those you find around the Web.  You put them into the software, save them to a PDF and then print them out on a color printer.

Totally pointless?  Of course, but isn’t that what teenagers and college students love?
