SD Association announces new memory card connections
The SD Association, the people responsible for making sure that all SD memory card items are compliant, has announced a new standard for the memory pins that will see data transfer speeds increasing by as much as 16 times.
The new cards will feature a new, dual-row pin memory design which will allow them to achieve a bus interface speed of up to 300 megabytes per second for SDXC and SDHC devices and memory cards. This will make them three times faster than the theoretical maximum of the UHS-I cards, and sixteen times faster than conventional cards. The good news is that it will also be fully backwards compatible which will allow devices equipped with it to still use SD, SDHC and SDXC cards.
“Our innovative dual-row pin design ultimately lets consumers using equipped productsto manage the massive storage capacity found on SDXC memory cards at incredible speeds,” said Norm Frentz, chairman of the SD Association. “SD can now support highdefinition video from Hollywood movie studios, television broadcasts, or HD videos takenon your latest vacation. SD is a very popular, extremely portable and easy-to-usestorage medium that has enhanced the enjoyment and portability of music, photos anddata. The Association remains committed to helping consumers maintain the value, usefulness and longevity of all of their SD products.”
There is no name yet for this new standard, nor any indication of when it will be released into consumer products. Considering that UHS-I (Ultra High-Speed) is still making its way into products, it would be safe to say it may be a little while before we see the new double-row cards popping up anywhere.
