ImageRights now offering a free tool to help protect image copyrights
In the age of the Internet it has become easier and easier for people to find images, but that also means that it has gotten thousands of times easier for someone to use an image they don’t have the rights to. Luckily that is why companies such as ImageRights exist, and now they are going to help out photographers who can’t afford to do an upfront payment for their services.
ImageRights has existed for some time, and its sole purpose is to help photographers to protect their images online from copyright infringement. All that you have to do is upload your image and the company then monitors millions of images around the Web to alert you of when people are using it without permission. Depending on how many images you had to protect, you paid anywhere from $9.95 to $39.95 a month for the service.
With the launch of a new image recovery service that the company will launch next month to help photographers recover compensation for their stolen images. Under the new free plan photographers who use the service will give ImageRights 50 percent of all funds they make from the recovered images. The paid plans will also pay a percentage to the company for its help, but it will only be 35 percent of the fees.
“As an advocate for photographers and illustrators, our goal is to help artistic professionals monitor how their work is being used on the Internet, and to partner with them to recoup lost profits when it’s being used illegally,” said Maria Kessler, senior vice president of business development at ImageRights and former president of the Picture Archive Council of America (PACA). “Image piracy is rampant online and by making these services more accessible, we’re enabling creatives to have more control over how their images are used, while sending a clear message that we are patrolling for unauthorized uses.”
While the paid offerings do offer a smaller percentage on recovered images, unless you are expecting a tremendous amount of images to be found, it doesn’t feel like a good bargain. I’d be much more interested in the free version to be sure.
