Sony introduces mirrorless NEX-3 and NEX-5

Sony introduces mirrorless NEX-3 and NEX-5While they aren’t DSLRs in and of themselves, the new NEX-3 and NEX-5 join Sony’s Alpha family of cameras with an impressive ray of features.

The new Sony NEX-3 and Sony NEX-5 are both foregoing mirrors to deliver the smallest, lightest interchangeable lens camera system possible (at this time).  Both units are using the new E mount for the lenses, but you can also use any of the  Sony α lenses by adding the optional LA-EA1 adapter.  The cameras are also lacking a built-in flash, but they do come with an attachable flash you can use via the smart accessory terminal, but they do not have a traditional hot shoe, so you will be restricted from using any flashes that mount via that method.

As for thickness, the NEX-5  is just 24.2mm (excluding grip and mount) and the NEX-3 is 25.4mm (excluding grip and mount) at their slimmest points.

Sony NEX-3 and NEX-5 Specifications

  • 14.2 effective megapixels Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor
  • 1080i HD movie recording (NEX-5) with stereo sound, fast and silent autofocus
  • HD video (720p) can also be captured by NEX-3 as compact MPEG4 files that are ideal for PC storage and web sharing
  • Smart accessory terminal on both cameras accepts the compact ECM-SST1 Stereo Microphone (optional) that captures a high-quality soundtrack for your HD videos
  • 25-point contrast-detect autofocus systems
  • 49-segment exposure meters
  • 3” Xtra Fine LCD screen with TruBlack technology that tilts up or down for comfortable viewing in any shooting position
  • Sweep Panorama. Just press the shutter button and sweep the camera horizontally or vertically. A high-speed burst of frames is stitched together automatically to create detail-packed 23 megapixel panoramas with a 226 degree effective angle of view
  • Auto HDR

Both units will be released in the U.K. in June.  No prices have been announced as of yet.
