CES flooded with new point and shoot cameras

CES flooded with new point and shoot camerasIf the number of point and shoot cameras on display at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) tells us anything, it’s that the market is alive and well.

While normally we try to focus on one camera per post around here, it would be impossible with the number of new units on display this week at CES. Olympus has nine new models, while Sony clocks in with eight new models in its Cyber-shot line.  While variety is the spice of life, I would hate to be in the market for a new camera right about now.

Olympus

Olympus is introducing four new models in the FE line — the FE-5030, FE-4040, FE-4030, and FE-47 — which all claim to be 14 megapixels, have 4x or 5x optical zoom, 2.7-inch LCD screens, digital image stabilization (the FE-4040 also has mechanical stabilization) and come in a variety of colors.

The µ-5010, µ-7030, µ-7040, and µ-9010 all have the same 14 megapixel claim,  but this will increase the optical zoom options to 5x, 7x and 10x along with some HD video recording on the µ-7030.

The µ Tough 3000 is the lone 12 megapixel entry and will feature a 3.6x wide angle zoom, a 2.7-inch LCD and some water-proofing, shock-proofing and freeze-proofing measures.

Sony

The new W390, W380, W370, W360, W350, W330 and W320 models all purport to be 14 megapixels, while the W310 will be 12 megapixels.  Each of these units are built around 1/2.3-inch “Super HAD” CCD sensors, but feature different lenses and displays.

On the higher end you have the Sony Cyber-shot W390 and W380 models that feature f2.4 Sony G lens and 5x optical zoom and 24mm wide angle lenses.  The W390 has a 3-inch LCD while the W380 has a 2.7-inch screen.

There are sure to be more coming out at the show, but isn’t this enough already?

While the e-reader market it still in its infancy, it appears that electronics companies are betting big that it will turn into a huge market. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas is swarming with new devices that want to help you replace the paper books in your life.
