Former editor-in-chief of JPG Magazine launches Pictory online magazine
It isn’t just readers who are leaving print media behind, but also the people who produce it.
Laura Brunow Miner, former editor-in-chief of JPG Magazine, has launched a new online magazine named Pictory.
The new site is currently a woman operation, but with the vision she has, it wouldn’t be too difficult for it to remain that way. Â Any photographer, amateur or professional, is encouraged to submit one photo to each of the potential themes the site will have. Â (You are limited to only one submission as she wants you to submit only your best work.) Â You then write up a brief story caption explaining the photo, and she will choose the 25 best ones.
“Overseas & Overwhelmed” is the name of the inaugural photo story on the site, and it features 25 photo stories of people experiencing culture shock in various locations around the world.  Some of the photos date back as far as 1974 taken by someone standing on a platform in West Berlin, sharing a silent communication with a lone man who stood on the East Berlin side, staring back at them.  It’s grainy black & white, but that only adds to the impact of the story they tell of the East Berlin police showing up.
There are currently five themes open to submissions: Portrait of a Place: San Francisco, My Most Meaningful Image, The House I Grew Up In, Learning from Our Elders and The One Who Got Away. You can read up on all the themes open for submission on the themes page of the site.
If you’re curious about the meaning of the name, don’t worry, so were we. According to the site it stands for:
A pictory=
a picture + story=
a captioned image=
a photo story.
It makes sense once you see it spelled out.
