Samsung SCH-W880 is a camera with a phone it, not a cameraphone
Samsung is preparing to release a new camera with a bit of an identity crisis: It’s a camera with a phone built in to it, but it isn’t a cameraphone.
Phones with cameras, better known as cameraphones, are fairly common these days. The features are simplistic, the resolution is low, and everyone is used to the fairly grainy shots they produce. However, it seems Samsung wants to change some of these assumptions, and is set to release a new device that is being billed as a camera with a phone built in to it.
The new SCH-W880 is slated for release in Korea this October and is being billed as a 12 megapixel point and shoot camera that has all of the usual features and controls of such a device, but it just happens to also include a phone. As Engadget joked, the new debate is if this should be billed as a “phonecamera” instead of a “cameraphone”, and it seems to be a valid questions as Samsung is really touting this as a new form of convergence device.
There is no word as of yet if this device will appear in any other markets, or even what its suggested retail price will be, but it does seem fairly likely this will find its way to other shores in the future if this is a new direction the company wants to go in.
