Samsung WB5000 offers up 24x optical zoom
Samsung’s new WB5000 may be classified as a compact camera, but it is sure offering up the benefits of a much larger model.
Samsung has announced the new WB5000 for release in the U.K. this September (no price has been listed as of press time), and it sure sounds like the perfect camera for serious hobbyists.
Going past the usual point and shoot crowd, with their usual over hyped mega pixel counts, the new WB5000 is offering up 12.5 mega pixels.  Unlike the overblown statements of most cameras, this one sounds and looks like it may actually deliver on that number.  The camera will feature a Schneider-KREUZNACH 26mm wide angle lens and 24x optical zoom, which will be far superior to the 5 or 6x optical zooms that consumers have come to expect.
The new unit is also going to offer up HD video recording in 1280x720p resolution at 30 frames per second using the latest H.264 format, so it should deliver on some really spectacular videos.
Samsung WB5000 Details
- Schneider-KREUZNACH 26mm wide angle lens
- 24x optical zoom
- HD video recording in 1280x720p resolution at 30 frames per second
- Optical and Digital Image Stabilization into a Dual Image Stabilization function
- Smart Face Recognition technology actually remembers faces it sees frequently and then prioritises them when focusing and exposing future shots
- “Blink Detection Mode†had the camera take a series of shots when closed eyes are detected so everyone is captured with their eyes open
- “Smile Mode†has a picture taken automatically when smiles are detected
- “Beauty Shot” mode retouches skin to three different user defined levels for brighter and smoother skin tones
- Manual modes allow the photographer to take over and adjust all settings
It would be nice if we knew the price, and also if this model was coming to the U.S.A. any time soon, but over all it sounds like a handy little camera for those people who are tired of point and shoots, but not ready for a full DSLR.
