Nikon S1000pj has built-in projector for showing off media on the goNikon seems to be on a roll with new releases, and while the Coolpix line may not be your cup of tea, you have to tip your hat to one of the wildest innovations a point and shoot has seen in quite some time.

Last week Nikon announced the new D300s SLR, but not to leave the common consumer out in the cold, the company is back this week with some major updates to its point and shoot Coolpix line.

While all together Nikon announced four new models for the Coolpix range today, the one being lavished with all of the attention has to be the S1000pj.  What does the “pj” stand for?  How about a built-in projector?  Yep, you read that right, it has a projector in it.

We’ve all had that moment where we’ve tried to share a new picture or video we’ve shot, and everyone has had to gather around to stare in to your 3″ screen to see it.  Or you have to find that stupid composite cable to hook the camera up to your TV to show off a video of your new puppy to your friends.  Well, the S1000pj takes care of all those hassles with its built-in projector that can display your media on any surface at a size of up to 40″.  With just the touch of a button you can show off slideshows of your latest still photos or playback any videos you have shot with the unit.  You can also add music, effects and transitions to anything on the camera.

As for the other features of the camera, they are fairly standard, but worth noting:

  • 12.1 megapixels
  • 5x Wide Angle Zoom-NIKKOR Glass Lens
  • ISO from 64-6400
  • 2.7-inch Wide Angle LCD display
  • 5-way VR Image Stabilization System
  • Subject Tracking
  • Scene Auto Selector Mode
  • Nikon’s Smart Portrait System and movie mode.

The camera will be available in September with a suggested retail price of $429.95.
