iPhone 3G S gets insane camera accessories
Do you have a mad desire to spend silly amounts of money on accessories for your iPhone 3G S to make the camera actually shoot something resembling quality pictures and video? Never fear, there are companies willing to help you do that!
While Apple tells you that the iPhone 3G S camera is 3 megapixels, it still has a sensor the size of a pin head. While people who understand cameras know that a sensor size does factor in to the quality of the images more than the MPs, your average consumer doesn’t. This seems to be what a few companies are excited about as they announce a slew of accessories for the iPhone camera that not only make no sense, they will make you look like the biggest goofball in history.
First up, Engadget brings to our attention the Factron iPhone case, which isn’t only metal, but has the ability to swap out different lenses for your iPhone 3G S. Sure the case alone will cost you $200, but then you get the privlage of shelling out $15 to $55 for the fish eye, wide-angle, and close-up lenses.
Then come the camera rigs. Pictured above is the ZGrip iPhone Pro from Zacuto which has multiple adjustements, and you can even purchase an accessory rod for shooting above a crowd. Of course, who doesn’t want to spend more money on an accessory rod after you’ve already spent $295 on just the basic set up?
If you aren’t feeling silly enough yet, just wait. For just a mere $5 more than the ZGrip, why not go for the Red Rock Micro shoulder mount? Yes, an actual shoulder mount rig with external light and microphone hook ups so you can officially have more rigging than “camera”!
I’m not sure if I worry more about the people who produce these things, or the people who buy them. Cameras in phones are generally for taking quick snap shots, or making sure you document your friend who passed out on the sofa after the party, they are not meant to be serious photography equipment. Sure the iPhone shooting video and allowing limited video editing is a nice add on for your general consumer, but is someone actually going to go out with a shoulder rig and do serious video shooting? Doubtful at best.
Why does that old saying of “you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear” come to mind?
