AgfaPhoto releases waterproof DV-600uw camera

By Sean P. Aune

AgfaPhoto releases waterproof DV-600uw camera

If you’re really feeling the need to take pictures under 33 feet of water, AgfaPhoto just released the camera you’ve been waiting for.

Able to stand water pressure up to two bars, you can expect the DV-600uw to be waterproof up to 10 meters or 33 feet of depth.  It is also dust resistant and can withstand minor falls if you should happen to drop it, although dropping it under water to a depth below for which it’s rated might be bad.

Unfortunately the camera gets to be a little less interesting when you get to the actual photography side of things as it is only 6 megapixels and offers no optical zoom feature.  While it does shoot video, it only records in VGA format, so no 720p high-definition that seems to be becoming the norm for most cameras these days.

A run down of the key specs includes:

  • Image Sizes: 3680 x 2760, 2816 x 2112, 2048 x 1536, 640 x 480
  • Movies: 640 x 480 and 320 x 240
  • Movies formatted in AVI for easy YouTube or similar site uploading
  • Underwater videos with sound
  • Hot key for easy switching from land mode to underwater mode
  • Lens – 6.09mm
  • 5X digital zoom
  • ISO – 100 to 1600, auto
  • 2.4″ TFT LCD viewscreen
  • 32MB built-in memory
  • SD/SDHC memory card
  • Uses 2 standard AA batteries

While waterproof cameras are nothing new, there just aren’t that many released in a given year.  Although it’s funny how just last week the Pentax Optio W80 was announced, so maybe there is a connection between their release and summer in the Northern hemisphere.

The DV-600uw isn’t going to win any awards for its features beyond being rugged, but depending on what you’re looking to do, it should be good enough.  The camera is available now for a suggested retail price of 149 euros ($199).
