SanDisk launches 32GB Extreme SDHC card

SanDisk launches 32GB Extreme SDHC card

Sometimes you just need more memory, and you need it to be faster to boot.  Luckily SanDisk is attempting to answer both problems with its latest entry into the SDHC card market.

Shipping to retailers in August, the new SanDisk 32GB SDHC card is a class 10 memory card, meaning that it exceeds the requirements for true HD video recording.  For true HD recording, a card needs to sustain a write speed of 24 MB/s, but this new card will be sustaining data transfer speeds of 30 MB/s.

While the card can contain up to 160 minutes of full HD 1920×1080, it is also going to allow you to store a heck of a lot more photos from a DSLR to boot.  While RAW format images are huge, this card can reportedly record up to 2500 of them, giving just about any photographer piece of mind when out shooting during their work.  It is also rated to work in temperatures ranging form minus 13 F (minus 25 C) to 185 F (85 C), so you may have some problems at the North or South pole with it, but otherwise you should be good to go most of the time.

What’s intriguing about this release is that this card will seem like old hat not long after its release.  At some point in 2010 we are supposed to start seeing the first SDXC memory cards released.  The first cards released in that new format will have 64GB of storage with access speeds of 52 MB/s.  While you won’t be able to use SDXC cards in current SD/SDHC slots, SDXC devices will be backwards compatible, so investing in this new SanDisk card wouldn’t be a total waste even when SDXC hits the shelves.

No suggested retail price for these new cards has been mentioned by SanDisk as of yet.
