ATP eases the pain of geotagging your photosThe pain of geotagging your images may have just gotten a whole lot simpler.

ATP has launced a new product called the GPS PhotoFinder Pro, which may make you wonder how you ever went about geotagging your photos without it.

As the name implies, the device is a GPS unit, but it has a bit of a twist to it.  Once you sync it with your camera’s internal time stamp to the UTC zone which is used by GPS satellites, you’ll be able to always have accurate GPS stamps for all of your photos.  All you need to do is hook it onto your camera bag, belt loop or anywhere else, and then before you offload your camera’s photos, you run them through the PhotoFinder Pro.  This will cause the time stamps on the photos and the GPS to sync up so you will have the most accurate tags possible.

The device is compatible with over 450 different cameras and memory card formats currently on the market today.   Even if it does not work directly with the memory card you are using, it can read the data from any memory card formatted in FAT/FAT32 thanks to USB card readers.  The tracking mode can be set to intervals of 5sec,10sec, 15sec, 30sec, and 60sec, but this will directly impact the battery life of the device, making it last anywhere from 550 hours to 5500 hours.  And if your reception isn’t good enough for some reason, you can also add an external GPS antenna (not included) for better signal strength.  Beyond the basic geotagging, the device can also generate KML files without a computer being involved so you can create overlays for Google Earth with ease.

All-in-all, this sounds like a fascinating device, and with more and more programs and photo sharing sites taking geo tags into consideration, it sounds invaluable.  The device is supposed to be available in July with a suggested retail price of $119.
