Flip Ultra HD offers two hours of HD video recording for under $200

April 27, 2009

flipRecently Cisco purchased the company Pure Digital, maker of the popular Flip series of camcorders, for a pretty sizable pile of cash. Now the company is releasing its very first camcorder since the buyout, the Flip Ultra HD. The high-definition camcorder lets you easily record high-resolution videos and upload them to the Web, all for under $200.

One of the weirdest things abut the Flip ultra HD is that it wasn’t actually formally announced by Pure Digital or Cisco, instead it just sort of appeared on Best Buy shelves and consequently the Internet over the past few days.

Since there was no formal announcement what we know about the camera are the tidbits that have been posted to the Web by people who have purchased the camera. We know the Ultra can record 120 minutes of video (an upgrade from the 90 minutes the previous version could handle), has an HDMI output for watching your videos directly on your television, and has a rechargeable battery with the option of putting in AA batteries when you get in a pinch.

It’s amazing to me how popular these camcorders have gotten over the past few years. Everyone wants to upload their videos to the Web, and there are more and more aspiring YouTube stars who are more concerned with creating Web quality videos that are easy to upload rather than high quality videos for movies and other purposes.

For the most part the Flip camcorders are designed for just web use. They don’t come with all the pre-sets you would find on a traditional camcorder for different lighting and shooting conditions and don’t have microphone inputs for interviews and the like…. what you see is what you get. That said, they do a pretty decent job of shooting videos that are YouTube or Web site bound.

The Flip Ultra HD should start popping up at a retailer near you soon (if it hasn’t already) for an MSRP of $199.99.
