Canon’s new Rebel T1i DSLR records 1080p video for under $900

March 27, 2009

canonrebelCanon is showing off a new addition to its Rebel line of digital SLRs: the Rebel T1i (EOS 500D). The DSLR takes pictures at a 15.1-megapixel resolution, and allows users to record 1080p high-definition video as well.

What makes this camera special besides it’s ability to record high-definition video is its price tag. The camera is expected to come in at just $800 for the body only when it’s released in May, and $900 packaged with Canon’s EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens. Typically digital SLRs that have added the high-definition video recording capability have gone for much more. The Rebel T1i’s price tag puts it well within the reach of many amateur photographers who would like to have the ability to shoot high-definition video but might not have tons of cash lying around to invest in a camera.

The camera is compatible with Canon EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series Speedlites, including new Speedlite 270EX, TS-E 17mm f/4L and TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II so you can use all the professional lenses you might be interested in alongside the camera body.

The camera uses Canon’s DIGIC 4 Imaging Processor, the same processor the company uses in some of its high-end camera and has an auto lighting optimizer, Live View, and a Creative Auto Mode that allows you to adjust some aspects of your pictures such as exposure compensation and shutter speed while keeping your camera in auto mode. The camera also has a continuous shooting mode that allows you to shoots pictures at 3.4fps for up to 170 JPEG images or nine RAW images per burst, for taking pictures of fast-moving events such as sports.

What do you think about camera manufacturers adding video recording modes to their cameras? I don’t know whether I would use a video recording mode on my DSLR if I had it. Would you?
