Wedding Photography Tips

March 25, 2009

weddingWedding photography can be pretty tricky, and if everything doesn’t go perfectly you’re likely to have an angry bride headed your way. If you’re new to wedding photography, here are a few tips to make sure everything goes perfectly on the big day.

Talk about it beforehand with the couple

Talk to the couple beforehand and get an idea on exactly what they’re looking for in their pictures. Do they want you to make sure to get pictures of grandma walking in, or is it more important for you to be behind the scenes with the nervous bride? Having a good idea of the couple’s expectations for the pictures can help you make sure you’re both on the same page and you’re doing what they want.

Get detailed

All the details are really what make a wedding special. Make sure you get some up close and personal pictures of the brides dress, the rings, the cake, the flowers … all the little things that went into the wedding should be captured on film as well. For things like the exchange of rings you can ask the couple to reenact the event afterward rather than trying to take a picture as it actually happens.

Keep it RAW

Weddings often take place in places with difficult lighting for photographers. If you shoot your pictures in RAW then you’ll be able to manipulate the exposure or white balance in the shot later on much easier, resulting in much better pictures.

Utilize continuous mode

Continuous mode on your camera can really come in handy at a wedding when things are constantly moving and changing. For important moments, try taking several pictures in continuous mode to make sure you get the perfect shot.

Keep everything

Along those same lines, keep all the pictures you take, and wait until you’re at home editing to decide any of them are “trash.” Often there will be portions of “bad” pictures that can be cropped and made into good ones.
