Toshiba Camileo S10: a cell-phone sized camcorder and digital camera
Toshiba is showing off a new compact HD camcorder that is sure to bring more than a few interested customers to the company. The camcorder, which is capable of taking 5-mgapixel pictures as well as shooting 1080p video, will have a final price tag of less than $200.
We’ve seen a lot of these types of cameras start be released over the past few years. Just this January Sony announced two new Webbie cameras that are designed for Web site use, so it’s no surprise that Toshiba would want to jump in on that action as well.
The Toshiba Camileo will be a compact camcorder about the size of a cell phone. The device will have a 2.5-inch LCD screen, and a 4x digital zoom. Part of how companies are able to make these web cameras so inexpensive is because they don’t put optical zoom lenses on them. Without an optical zoom you’re going to be hard pressed to be able to shoot video of anything that’s not going on right in front of your camera, which a definite downside.
On the upswing however you can put something like the Camileo in your pocket and carry it around all day shooting pictures of your family and making videos, without having to lug around a camera bag or a heavy camera. There is certainly something to be said for convenience, and web camcorders are pretty darn convenient.
The Toshiba Camileo S10 is expected to be released in the United Kingdom in May for 129.99 pounds which averages out to be around $182 at the current conversion rate. There hasn’t been any talk of brining the camera to the United States, but with the popularity of YouTube and compact web cameras here, it would be a logical choice for Toshiba to bring it to the states as well.
