Pretec introduces SDXC cards, with plans for a 2TB SDXC card
Pretec has unveiled the first SDXC memory cards. The Secure Digital Extended Capacity cards were originally announced in January, and are now available for purchase. Currently the cards are available in a capacity of 32GB, however the company has plans to release cards with storage capacities up to 2TB (2048GB).
The SDXC cards now available have read/write speeds up to 50MB/s, but the company has plans to offer cards in the future with read/write rates topping 300MB/s. In addition to the SD cards, the company has also announced a Compact Flash card. The 666x Compact Flash Cards (which are pretty unfortunately named if you ask us) have read/write speeds up to 100MB/s.
Pretec explained how the cards work in the press release: ” By using exFAT file system, Pretec’s 32GB SDXC card is not compatible with SDHC, which is using FAT32 file system. The maximum access speed of traditional SD card (SD 1.1 spec.) is 12.5MB/s and maximum capacity is 4GB, in which Pretec 4GB SD is the 1st such high capacity card in the world in July 2005. World’s 1st 8GB SDHC card was introduced by Pretec in Aug. 2006 , and subsequently joint displayed with Sanyo’s DV Xacti HD1a in Photokina 2006 maximum speed increased to 25MB/s for SDHC (SD 2.0 spec.), which is the access speed of Pretec 166X SDHC card.”
I for one and really excited about higher capacity cards becoming available. Theoretically with a 2TB card you could record all the high-definition video and take all the pictures you can possibly handle on a family vacation or at an event, and never have to switch out the card.
It’ll be interesting to see how much the cards retail for, and what sorts of devices start making themselves compatible with them. As of right now there are no SDXC compatible devices available on the market. My bet is the first one is either a DSLR, or a camcorder.
Could you see yourself using an SDXC card? What price would you want them to be at before you would buy one?

James;
wouldnt using an sd as a hard disk replacement (especially for an os or backups that involve large files) get extremely hot like sd’s usually do? which (correct if im wrong) would pretty much ruin it, 2TB is alot to lose
but a 2TB camcorder or phone wud be
and i wud suggest in the $100-$200 range wud be fair to me but the sdxc’s would possibly follow in the SD/SDHC’s footsteps and get cheaper as the bigger cards come out
great/insane

As a hard disk replacement… thats all i would ever use it for… if it wasn’t said to hold up i would never switch. For backup i would say no way. . . i mean, is SO small and easy to lose. Id rather get the 2tb 10 pound box to backup stuff on for prolly 1/3 of the price.
However, if kept in my comp at all times, that would be fine. So i could see myself maybe paying 150 bucks tops for it, and not a dime at all if I caught any info of them blanking out or becoming unusable after a while.
I would also get it for a camera. Why have 4 or 5 small cards and not know what pics and vids are on what card when you can pitch out some extra dough and lose the hassle of loading 5 cards to find what you want ENTIRELY. One of the reasons I dont use my camera is because im always switching cards to show my friends all my shots. Its gotten to the point where I just say, “ask me later when I have them all on my computer.”
On a side note, its cool to hear this… in 15 years you never know… this news may be so old that 2TB cards are almost the standard, maybe even one day we will get to see deals like “buy this camera and get a 2TB card for free” Wont that be the day?
