Epson R-D1x: true love for the true enthusiastThe Epson R-D1x has a rangefinder and good lenses.
If you seriously take pictures you use a rangefinder and good lens. It is as simple as that. Yes, you can take great pictures with all sorts of cameras. Happens all the time. But the Epson R-D1x is the sort of camera serious users drool over.

Notice there is only a a 6MP sensor inside the Epson R-D1x.

David Pogue, who writes for the New York Times on matters technical and who has earned a lot of respect in the industry, has shown by actual demonstration that if you can take a picture properly — image centered, focus adjusted, scene composed — that anything above 5 megapixels is superfluous to requirements. You may not agree with him but you must read his Breaking the Myth of Megapixels, which is illustrated with examples and had many professional photographers cheering.

The big difference for most of us is the rangefinder.

On a very bright day it is literally impossible to sort an image with the standard screen. All you can do it make a vague stab at it.Which is why you need a lot of megapixels to allow you a lot of space for getting it wrong.

epson1_01l1The Epson R-D1x is not a new, new camera. It is an improved extension of Epson’s old R-D1.

New additions to the Epson R-D1x include the ability to save images onto an SDHC memory card as both RAW and JPEG at the same time which is handly but not something to lay out big bucks for.
But look at it. That is one wonderful camera. It comes damn close to a Leica M8 and, as it happenes, uses Leica lenses.

Some photographers think those lens take the sharp edge off a screen. Most Leica users think this a lot of old cobblers.

At the moment it is only be sold in Japan and at $3,000. This is no bad thing as it means my children will not starve this winter. But that is some camera.
