Samsung CL5: a 9-megapixel camera with built-in MP3 player

February 27, 2009

samsungc5This week Samsung introduced a new compact digital camera with a twist. In addition to taking photos and shooting video, the Samsung CL5 also has a built-in MP3 player.

I have to say the first time I read that the CL5 was going to have a MP3 player built in, I stopped for a minute and had to read the camera description again. MP3 players are certainly not commonplace in digital cameras, or at least not in cameras that are able to take any level of quality photographs.

At first thought you might think the MP3 player is for rocking out to some of your favorite tunes while you snap away photos. What it’s actually for is for creating slideshows and music videos directly on the camera and watching them back on the cameras LCD screen. The idea behind the MP3 player in CL5 is actually pretty genius.

The slideshow setting is by far the more standout feature of the camera. In addition to the MP3 player though the camera is actually a pretty decent shooter. The camera takes pictures at a 9-megapixel resolution and has Samsung’s new Smart AUTO scene recognition.

The idea behind the Smart AUTO is that it helps you pick out what the appropriate scene settings might be for the situation you’re shooting in. While you may not personally be able to choose between the “indoor” setting and “night” mode in your home, the Smart AUTO will evaluate the situation and use what (of the 11 preset settings) it thinks is best.

The camera also has face detection, and even more importantly face recognition. Samsung’s face recognition learns the faces of people you often photograph and then lets you search through pictures on your camera by individuals.

The CL5 will be available in April of this year in a variety of colors including silver, royal black, arty red, candy pink and purple and will retail at around $300.
