Dell’s Wasabi PZ310 photo printer doesn’t use ink
The first thing you’ll notice about Dell’s new Wasabi PZ310 mobile printer, is that it doesn’t use any ink. The ultra-compact printer can produce 2×3-inch prints in under a minute, and does it all without using any ink.
The Wasabi is the newest printer to use ZINK Imaging’s ZINK Zero Ink Printing Technology. The technology uses special paper with embedded yellow, magenta, and cyan dye crystals. ZINK-enabled devices such as the Wasabi printer heat up the crystals in order to activate them, and colorize them according to your picture’s needs.
“The Dell Wasabi is the fourth product available using the ZINK Technology, with many more on the way, including those capable of making larger prints,” said Wendy Caswell, President and CEO ZINK Imaging. “The Wasabi joins the growing family of Dell products, like the Inspiron Minis, that are redefining value, personalization, and customization for connected mobile lifestyles.”
The idea behind the printer is actually pretty cool. Theoretically you will never have to buy another ink cartridge if you’re using the printer. While paper is undoubtedly more expensive, buying special paper is a lot less hassle than trying to purchase the paper and a slew of ink cartridges separately. Using no ink also allows the printer to be exceptionally small, and cheap. The Wasabi runs just $99, which is pretty reasonable in my opinion.
Currently the Wasabi is available in blue, black and pink. In addition to being able to simply print your pictures the device can also receive images sent from Bluetooth-enabled handsets, so it could be a great way to quickly and easily print out pictures taken with your mobile phone.
I wish the pictures form the device were a little larger. Right now it only prints out wallet sized photos. If they develop a standard 4×6 option, I could really see it selling much better. What do you think?
