Nikon’s new S-series Coolpix cameras

February 4, 2009

nikons630Nikon has introduced four new S-series Coolpix ultra-compact cameras. The S630,S620, S230, and S220 are all pocket sized cameras “designed with one thing in mind: to offer users ultimate style, speed and simplicity in a compact camera body.” Here’s a rundown of what each model has to offer:

Nikon S630

The Nikon S630 is a 12 megapixel camera with image-sensor shift vibration reduction, and a 7x optical zoom. The camera has both Nikon’s smile and blink detection. Smile detection automatically detects when a person you’re taking a photo of smiles, and takes two sequential shots as soon as a smile happens. Combined with blink detection, the camera will automatically save the shot where the subject’s eyes are open.

Nikon S620

The Nikon S620 is designed for taking pictures quickly on the fly. The camera has a start-up time of just 0.7 seconds, takes pictures at a 12 megapixel resolution, has a 4x zoom lens, and 2.7-inch LCD. The camera has “four anti-blur technologies, including lens-shift VR, and Motion Detection, new Blink Proof and Quick Retouch, Subject Tracking AF and Scene Auto Selector.” The S620 will be available in pink, purple, black, and silver.

S230/S220

Both of the S230 and S220 take photos at a 10 megapixel resolution. The cameras have 3z zoom lenses, and seventeen scene modes. The S230 has a 3-inch LCD screen, while the S230 has a 2.5-inch screen. Both cameras have metal bodies and will be available in silver, green, red, blue, purple, and black.

PMA is scheduled to take place the first week in March of this year. It’s nice to see so many new cameras coming out so close to both PMA, and so soon after CES. All of these look like they would be excellent options for a camera to keep in your purse, or pocket for taking quality photos on the fly- expect them out in March.
