Nikon announces the 12-megapixel P90 ultra-zoom digital camera

February 3, 2009

nikonp90Nikon has announced the 12.1-megapixel P90 digital camera. The new ultra-zoom bridge camera has an astounding 24x wide angle optical zoom, and is designed for users who want a Nikon-quality camera, but also a camera that they can carry around in their pocket with them.

Mark Pekelharing, the product manager of consumer products at Nikon Europe said, “This camera demonstrates Nikon’s devotion to camera enthusiasts. The amazingly powerful 24x zoom, 3.0-inch LCD screen with vari-angle tilt function, vibration reduction, and high sensitivity make the P90 a no-compromise bridge between a compact camera and a D-SLR.”

The D90 has high-speed shooting (which allows you to shoot up to 45 consecutive shots at 15fps). You would typically use high-speed shooting for things like sports games, where the action is moving very quickly, so you don’t miss out on catching a particular moment.

For family photographers, the D90 has face recognition that can recognize up to 12 different faces, auto scene modes, face priority, smile mode and blink warning. The face detection with recognition can remember faces of people you typically take pictures of, and then give those faces priority in shots of larger groups. In scenes where there’s a lot going on, the face priority will make sure the persons face is in focus, and not a branch or other object near the persons face.

Smile and Blink modes are designed to take a picture when someone smiles, or not take a picture when someone blinks, respectively. If you take a lot of pictures of people you’ve inevitably had the problem where someone has blinked in your photo, this can cut down on the amount of “bad” pictures you end up taking with your camera.

Built in scene modes in the D90 include: Portrait, Panorama Assist, Close-up, Sunset, Fireworks show, Party, Food, Back Light, Landscape, Museum, Beach/Snow, Copy, and Night Portrait.

The camera will be available in March black only for a suggested retail price of $339.

Well, the consumers this camera is intended for, have apparently gigantic pockets to accommodate it! It’s a pity I haven’t, else I, too, would be able to have my HasselBlad system ever-at-my-disposal, safely stored in my pocket…

although you have depicted the nikon coolpix P90 you continuously refer to it as the D90.

    tsk tsk.

Classic exposition, I have also mentioned it in my blog article. But it is a pity that almost no friend discussed it with me. I am very happy to see your article.
