SDXC memory cards announced with sizes up to 2TB
First there was secure digital cards that allowed us to store more pictures than we ever thought possible with traditional film. Then a few years later SDHC (Secure digital high capacity) cards were introduced that allowed us to store even more. Now- secure digital has gone a step further with the introduction of SDXC (secure digital extended capacity) with memory capacities up to 2TB and read/write speeds up to 104MB per second.
With the new cards you would theoretically be able to store 60 hours of high-definition video or 17,000 (yes, 17,000) pictures on a single card.
“SDXC is a large-capacity card that can store more than 4,000 RAW images, which is the uncompressed mode professionals’ use, and 17,000 of the fine-mode most consumers use. That capacity, combined with the exFAT file system, increases movie recording time and reduces starting time to improve photo-capturing opportunities,” said Shigeto Kanda, general manager at Canon. “Improvements in interface speed allow further increases in continuous shooting speed and higher resolution movie recordings. As a memory card well suited to small-sized user-friendly digital cameras, the SDXC specification will help consumers realize the full potential of our cameras.”
While there are obviously no devices that use the cards now (a device will have to be made for the SDXC cards- you can’t just put them in your traditional digital camera) it’s amazing to think that there could be a day where you could store more information on your digital camera than is available on many of today’s desktop and notebook computers.
I personally could see a huge advantage for these when shooting videos for family vacations. Todays camcorders can often take pretty high quality stills. With a memory card this large you could take a fairly substantial amount of pictures and all the video you can handle on a family vacataion without ever having to download to a computer. Pretty net.
