New DXG-581V mini camcorder to make pro movies

New DXG-581V high-definition mini camcorder can make pro moviesThe new  DXG-581V high-definition mini camcorder looks like an amateur camcorder. What you need to look for is the standards to which it shoots. It is 1080p, which is the highest standard on the consumer video market today. It is to normal video as 16 mm was to Super 8. Professional rather than amateur quality.

In Australia there is a channel called Aurora which runs video content which ranges from the sublime to the gorblimey. It is all shot at 1080p, which is the minimum accepted. It is also the maximum as well.

Typically you would shoot this on a Sony which would cost you over $2,000. Depending on the model it could be well over $2,000.

This new camera, the DXG-581V, is going on sale in the first quarter of this year and the price will be $180.

Note we have not got our hands on this camera, we have not tested it. But if it is to 1080p standard you are looking at something like 1920 x1080 resolution at 30 frames per second. Even though this is only 8 megapixels it is serious filming.

In the price you get a vertical camera (there is a DXG-595V model which is more traditionally shaped) with expandable storage will let you make high quality video to a standard that is suitable for HD television. Not ordinary television. Better. HD.

As well there is video editing software. In truth, video editing on a PC is possible and can be done. But video editing on a Mac is the way to go. If you can beg or borrow time on a Mac you will get your video edited in a quarter of the time and to a very high standard.

There is a school of thought that the Macintosh was handed down by the angels on a big fluffy cloud. That it can do no wrong. Which is probably not factually correct. But when it comes to editing it is the Mac first and the rest nowhere.

If you add enough memory with an SD cards — there is a slot for it — you could certainly shoot an hour of quality video without even thinking of running out of space. The whole idea is incredible. A video camera shooting at a standard that is often used by television stations and many pros.

In size it is only 2.69 x 1.46 x 3.87′ and it works in a vertical format which would make it much easier to hold still. It also runs on AAA batteries which means you need never worry about charging.

Now the downside.

It has a four times digital zoom which is effectively saying it has no zoom at all.

It has a digital voice recording function and that, in truth, is where you might run into trouble. One of the most difficult parts of making semi-pro movies is getting the sound right.  Checking the specifications there is no mention of a microphone out. If you have to use the microphone built into the machine you are going to get crap sound — no risk. If I was shooting a movie I would be more inclined to use this as back-up.

Having said that, if that machine works up to its specs it is a new direction for camcorders. Cheap, cheerful and able to produce results to professional standards. The mind boggles.

No, I recommend you avoid DXG products. I have sampled their products and you can do much better elsewhere.
