Before anyone says that no one needs a 50 megapixel camera and no private owner has one, consider this: Nikon once ran an advertisement showing six very specialized lenses and said no owner in the world would have all of them. Nikon was soon proved wrong.

The holidays may be over, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still get some use out of all your holiday trimmings. If you received any presents wrapped in colored cellophane this year (or if you happen to have a little extra cellophane kicking around the house) then you can create some neat and inexpensive gels for lighting.

Making truly panoramic shots — that is 360 degrees — on an ordinary digital camera is possible but not easy. Now a new digital camera, which looks like something from science fiction although it is turned on its side to fit in the picture, has fixed that.

LEICA fans are fanatics. Many of them believe the Leica stopped being a valid camera after the M3. (Please note the miniature Minox Leica M3 was not a true Leica. I have one. It takes seriously horrible pictures.) It would be difficult to convince true believers that the Titanium digital Leica is a Leica in the sense of the word that they understand.

The Motorola Motozine ZN5 is a totally new animal. It is part cell phone and part digital camera but with the emphasis on digital camera. It is the result of co-operation between Motorola and Kodak. Most mobile phones have the camera as an afterthought. Not this one.

It happens. Products are launched and the faults are not found until afterwards. Canon has launched its new 5DMark II camera. In some circumstances, some lights, white dots become black dots and the resulting image looks as though it has been covered in carbon dust.
