Professional Photography Gear of the Year

December 31, 2008

Photo District News has announced their picks for “Photography Gear of the Year.” The site has made some picks for the camera of the year as well as the lens, printer, computer, laptop, storage device, and monitor of the year for professional photographers. While most of these items are out of the price range (and the needs) of amateur photographers and consumers, it’s interesting to see what earned top honors.

Camera of the year – Nikon D700

PDN picked the Nikon D700 as their camera of the year. The 12 megapixel digital SLR has a “full-frame” CMOS sensor and runs around $3000. The camera has a as ISO from 200-6400, shoots 5fpd (with the option to boost that to 8fps with the optional MB-D!) multi-power battery pack, has two live view shooting modes, 51-point autofocus with 3D focus tracking, Nikon’s dynamic dust reduction system, and scene recognition. The D700 is a pretty solid camera, but the $3000 price range puts it out of the reach of most consumers or amateur photographers.

Printer of the Year- HP Designjet Z3200

We don’t do much in the way of covering printers here on Blorge, but a good photo printer is something that every photographer should have on hand. This particular printer has a built-in spectrophotometers, chromatic red and quad black inks, and faster speed and workflow than HP’s previous version of the printer. This pro printer comes with a very pro price tag, running close to $3,400. Replacement ink for the printer runs close to $90 a cartridge as well- so you’ll be putting a lot of money into the printer on a consistent basis.

Computer of the Year- Apple Mac Pro

I’ve always personally been a huge fan of Macs, so it’s not a huge surprise that PDN selected the Mac Pro as their computer of the year. The computer is a solid choice for anyone who wants to work with photos, graphics, or video and is super fast for rendering things with multiple layers.
