50 megapixel camera: available now

December 27, 2008

Before anyone says that no one needs a 50 megapixel camera and no private owner has one, consider this: Nikon once ran an advertisement showing six very specialized lenses and said no owner in the world would have all of them. Nikon was soon proved wrong.

So it is possible — not likely, possible — that we will see a private owner with the XMV-50100 camera which handles 50 megapixels resolution.

The camera concerned comes from illunis LLC,  a custom OEM camera specialist, and is its latest camera, the XMV 50100. This is a 50 megapixel camera based on the Eastman Kodak KAF-50100 sensor.

If you have that sort of set up you are going to get incredible resolution of 8,176 x 6,132 pixels. And there are additional features such as integrated shutter control, advanced triggering and CCD read-out control.

Plainly this is not a camera for taking happy snaps. It is for specific industrial purposes.

Erik Vermeulen, director of sales and marketing said, ‘This demonstrates illunis’s commitment to high performance imaging and innovation for Industrial, Scientific, and Military market applications.’

And on its web site the camera is stated as being ideal for document imaging, archival imaging or studio imaging.

So if we are not going to buy one, and we probably are not, why is this worth reporting?

Because this is the way digital photography goes.

There was a time when 10 megapixels was considered unachievable and reputable photographers said no one would ever need more than 4 megapixels. Now they have raised that figure. So, yes, you can think that in the future high end digital cameras will be working at 50 megapixels. Which will make them twice as sharp as 35mm and even sharper than the old Hasseblad. Think three years down the line. It will happen.
