Holiday Photo Taking Tips
It’s that time of year again, where photographers both amateur and professional are faced with the task of photographing their families’ Christmas events. Photographing holiday parties and gatherings can be a daunting task. Here are some tips to help make your picture taking adventures go off without a hitch this holiday season.
Charge Up Your Batteries
This may seem like a no brainer step, but it’s very easy to go to one party and take pictures and then completely forget to charge your batteries before the next leaving you with a camera that you can’t even turn on. While some consumer cameras these days take AA’s, if your camera takes lithium batteries like many compact cameras and DSLR’s you could end up completely missing out on photographing the event. If you won an extra battery for your camera it could be a good idea to have that on hand as well just in case.
Take Some Pictures of The Set-Up
Grandma baked a fancy cake, your wife created some pretty fantastic decorations for the table…whatever special preparations went into your celebration try to capture them before the event kicks off. Often the decorations are some of the most worth photographing things at a holiday celebration, and the most left out. Try and take pictures of anything special that’s been created for the event. If you’re at an event with a tree taking pictures of the ornaments can also be a neat idea, especially if those ornaments (or other crafts for that matter) were created by children in the house.
Take Posed as well as Candid Shots
Try to take pictures of family members interacting together naturally as well as some of those traditional posed shots. A picture of your eight-year-old niece and grandma posed may be cute, but a picture of your niece showing grandma how to use her new DVD player might be even better. Try to capture a mix.
Don’t Get Stuck Behind The Camera
Don’t let your job as photographer take away from your real job of being a guest. Try to put the camera down and enjoy the celebration!
