Leica: exclusive Titanium edition of 10,000
By Gareth Powell
LEICA fans are fanatics. Many of them believe the Leica stopped being a valid camera after the M3. (Please note the miniature Minox Leica M3 was not a true Leica. I have one. It takes seriously horrible pictures.) It would be difficult to convince true believers that the Titanium digital Leica is a Leica in the sense of the word that they understand.
This Leica D-LUX4 works with all of the standard add-ons available for the standard D-LUX4. But if you buy it you, and 10,000 other mug punters, have an exclusive camera with a titanium-colored leather case. It will be available next month.
The PR puffery that describes the camera confirms its vulgarity:
‘The silver-grey of the Leica D-LUX 4 Titanium has an unmistakeably exclusive look that makes this special edition an elegant collector’s piece with its own particular expression of luxury. The camera body of the titanium edition has a particularly luxurious look and feel, but still remains light and extremely resilient. Thus, the Leica D-LUX 4 Titanium has a metal body that has been constructed with the same precision and attention to detail as the standard models, and the exclusive use of the highest quality materials in its construction guarantees users absolute reliability in every situation.’
Not the sort of writing that makes you lust after the camera. The price appears to be around $1,400.
