Photo tutorial: Traditional camera tripod alternatives

December 4, 2008

Camera shake is one of the bigger obstacles a photographer can face. When you’re shooting pictures handheld, your camera shaking can make your pictures appear blurry and can take what might otherwise look to be a professional shot and make it look amateur. An easy and obvious solution to the problem is to put your camera on a tripod. While tripods are obviously the most practical solution they are typically also reasonably expensive as well as cumbersome and heavy to tote around everywhere. If you don’t want to use a tripod here are a few tripod alternatives:

DIY Camera Stabilizer

This is a really quick, easy, and cheap solution to reducing camera shake. A screw is tied to a string, which is then tied to a weight. You step on the weight and the tension from the string helps you naturally stabilize your camera. After shooting this gadget will easily fit in the pocket of your camera bag, and weighs so little you won’t even know it’s there.

Tennis Ball Tripod

Have you ever thought about using an old tennis ball as a tripod? This video shows you how you can create a simple compact tripod you can use for tabletop shots out of a tennis ball.

Giant Cheap Tripod

Sometimes you need a really big tripod. Big tripods besides being mega large are also typically mega expensive. These directions show you how you can create an eight foot high tripod out of PVC pipes for around $30. While pretty cool in theory, I can’t image where you would store this thing when it’s not in use….that’s HUGE!

There are tons of other camera tripod alternatives out there. Here’s a list of a few more. What alternatives from the traditional tripod do you know about?
