Block Posters: Print wall sized posters on your average household printer

December 2, 2008

Printing large poster size prints is well within the reach of the resolution of many people’s digital cameras, but not their photo printers. The average consumer probably only has the ability to print a picture as big as a standard piece of paper, with a few being able to print slightly large prints- but nothing room or poster sized. Block Posters is a site that allows you to use your average printer to print room sized pictures by slicing them up and printing them in sections.

The idea behind Block Posters is pretty simple. You upload your picture to the site, and then tell it how many pieces of paper you would like your picture distributed over. You could turn one picture into six pieces of paper, or one picture into eighteen. The more pieces of paper you select, the larger your ultimate print will end up being.

Obviously, this isn’t going to be something you use to make a nice poster sized print to hang up in your living room. No matter how skilled you are with crazy glue you’re more than likely going to be able to see the lines connecting the individual pieces of paper.

Block Posters does have some pretty awesome possibilities however. When I first saw the site I started imagining photos that I could break up into different pages and then frame those pages individually. It could potentially be a pretty cool look if you found the right picture.

All of the pictures off the site are printed with a border, which can be pretty annoying if you’re trying to piece them together- but they do that so your printer doesn’t end up cutting parts of the picture off without your knowledge (they let you do that while you’re trying to cut off the border with scissors).

This site seems to have infinite creative possibilities. What ideas can you come up with for Block Posters?
