Zacuto video rig for your DSLR

By Emily Price

Zacuto is showing off a new rig that allows you to turn your digital SLR into more of a professional video camera. The rig is designed to work with the video capable Canon 5D Mark II and Nikon D90 and has bolt-on professional movie-camera-like zoom controls, a lens hood, light controlling barn doors video monitor, and a structural beam.

There’s only one thing I can say about this one…wow.

While I’d have to say that most of the people purchasing the canon mark II and Nikon D90 cameras are probably the type that are concerned about the quality of their product, I’d also have to say they’re considerably more concerned about the picture quality for their camera rather than the video quality.

When these DSLR’s started adding video functions a few months ago I even talked to quite a few photographers who didn’t think they would ever even use the video function on the camera. It’s not true across the board by any means, but professional photographers are typically not professional videographers as well. And if they are, they certainly aren’t going to bust out their SLR to shoot their professional video.

A rig like this one is something that typically only a professional would use. I just can’t see who would buy something this complex to use with their SLR rather than buying something to instead work with a professional video camera.

If nothing else, they are pretty cool looking. The kits really could help you shoot some pretty great video with your DSLR, although I still doubt it would be anywhere near the quality level you could get from using a professional camera.

What do you think about rigs like this for DSLRs? Can you see a practical use for something like this or does it just seem needless?
