Takara Tomy announces 5 megapixel camera with built-in printer

November 12, 2008

Japanese based company Takara Tomy has announced the new XIAO Tip-521 digital camera. The 5 megapixel camera has some of the same specs as you would find in similar camera models with one interesting twist: it also prints photos.

The XAIO Tip-521 has a 5 megapixel sensor for taking photographs, a 2.48-inch LCD, and 16MB of internal storage for photos as well as SD/SDHC expansion for added storage.

The added bonus of this camera, however, is the printer. The camera stores up to 20 sheets of paper for printing photos on the go Polaroid style. Your pictures can also be uploaded to your computer and printed out on your home printer or at a drug store just as you can with a typical digital camera.

Unfortunately it looks like these are only available in Japan now, but I would love to see a US release of the camera either by Takara Tomy, or by a US copycat company.

I was always a huge fan of the Poloroid camera. There’s something awesome about being able to print out photographs you take instantly on the spot. There’s not a lot of information available on this camera, so I’m not sure whether you can do any photo editing before you print out from the camera, what the quality level would be, or honestly how long the whole printing process would take. The idea is a pretty great one though regardless.

Instant printing is something we haven’t really seen show up in digital cameras lately, it’s definitely a niche market that is worth tapping into, especially with a camera as compact as the XIAO Tip-521 looks to be.

What do you think about having the ability to instantly print your photos? Is that a camera feature you would use or would you rather print your photos out traditionally?
