Canon intros first consumer cameras with Digic 4 processor
By Emily Price
Canon has introduced its first compact cameras to use its upgraded Digic 4 processor. The processor was previously only available on the companies digital SLR’s, specifically the EOS 50D and 5D Mark II cameras. The four cameras that now use the processor include some of the companies compact Elph line as well as an ultra zoom consumer camera.
Here’s a rundown of all the new cameras:
Canon PowerShot G10
The Canon PowerShot G10 is an update to the PowerShot G9 camera. The camera can take photos at a 14.7 megapixel resolution, and has a 5x zoom. The camera is a slight step up in megapixels from the G9 that had 12.1 megapixels, but it’s also a small step back in zoom (the G9 had a 6x zoom). The camera adds face detection, a popular feature recently for consumer cameras, and has a face detect mode that will wait until you have two subjects in a shot before taking a picture (in case the photographer wants to get in on the action). The camera has a 3-inch LCD, compensation dial for making adjustments on the fly, optical image stabilization, and can shoot in RAW mode. Retail price for the camera is expected to be around $500.
Canon SX1 IS
The Cano9n SX1 IS is an update to the Canon S5 IS, the camera has a 20x optical zoom, preset scene modes as well as manual control options, a pivoting LCD, and a hot shoe so you can attach an external flash. Retail price for the camera is expected to be around $400.
Canon Digital Elph SD880 IS and SD990IS
The Canon Digital Elph line had two updated models released. The Canon SD880 IS will have a 10-megapixel resolution, 4x zoom, and a 3-inch LCD. The camera will be available in silver and gold for a retail price of $300. For $100 more you can get the SD990 IS which allows you to adjust your shutter priority an aperture, has a 14.7-megapixel resolution, 3.7x optical zoom, and a 2.5-inch LCD. The camera will be available in black, silver, and red.
