SanDisk announces 32GB Extreme CompactFlash Card
By Emily Price
SanDisk has announced a new 32GB SanDisk Extreme CompactFlash Card. The card is the newest addition to SanDisk’s “SanDisk Extreme III” line of flash cards and combines fast data transfer rates with a large storage capacity.
The cards are able to read and write at a speed of 30MB per second. The fast read/write speed of the cards make them ideal for use in camcorders. Scott Sheehan, director of marketing for new and emerging markets at Thomson said “The 32GB SanDisk Extreme III CompactFlash cards are a great fit for our Infinity DMC 1000/10 and DMC 1000/20 camcorders… Our customers want a choice in media that meets the needs of their file-based workflows. Solid state memory provides the fastest access to such content, and with SanDisk CompactFlash it’s also affordable. Using SanDisk’s 32GB Extreme III CompactFlash card, our customers can record more than 80 minutes of 100 MB/s, 10-bit, 4:2:2 HD video at the high performance needed for today’s professional video applications.”
The increased storage capacity of cards holds an obvious high advantage to photographers. The large storage space on the card makes it the ideal card to carry along with you on a longer shoot, and 32GB should be enough storage space to hold several thousand images, even in some of the highest megapixel cameras on the market. For photographers who may be switching between several different flash cards during a shoot, using just a single larger card could be an exceptionally welcome change.
The 32GB cards are expected to become available worldwide in October for purchase with a recommended price of $299.99.
I for one think I’m going to pick one of these up. I do a great deal of shoots at concerts, and in festival atmospheres I often find myself having to switch out a flash card unexpectedly, and often at the exact wrong moment in a show.
Do you see yourself using a 32GB card, or is that too much storage?
