Nikon N90 made official

By Emily Price

The Nikon N90 was recently announced, by accident in an article in USA Today. The digital SLR is expected to be released next month, and is expected to have the ability to record high-definition video, a first for a digital SLR.

Video recording has become pretty much a standard in smaller consumer cameras, but it has traditionally been left off more expensive professional cameras and digital SLRs. The Nikon N90 uses a fast frame rate within the camera to capture video in both standard and high-definition. Video is saved to the same memory card as your photos, and can then be uploaded to your computer and shared on the web, or burned onto a DVD.

The D90 will take pictures at a 12.3 megapixel resolution onto SD and SDHC cards, which have become pretty much a standard in Nikon cameras as of late. The camera uses Nikon’s Scene Recognition System to help the camera adapt to different shooting situations by auto correcting the cameras exposure and white balance.

The camera can shoot with an ISO anywhere from 200 to 3200 low-noise, with an ISO of up to 6400 available. The shooter also has a multi-cam autofocus with 11 AF points; continuous shooting at 4.5 frames per second, and can be started up in less than a second.

What do you think about adding video shooting to professional style cameras? While its nice that they’re adding the function camera, how likely do you think it is that photographers will be interested in using the function? Usually people who purchase DSLRs are concerned with image quality. Those photographers in theory are more likely to purchase a camcorder for their video needs instead of relying on their camera to work as both.

The Nikon N90 is expected to hit stores in September for $1,299 with lens included
