Wanokoto makes new photos old again

August 19, 2008

Adding effects your photos can be a neat way to make an old photo look new again, or a new photo look old as is the case with Wanokoto Lab’s web app. The application takes your uploaded photos, and ages them in seconds to look like they were something taken fifty or 60 years ago.

Using Wanokoto is exceptionally simple. You simply upload your photo to the service and then let Wanokota do its magic. Your photo is turned into an older version of itself instantly, and your “new” photo is available to download back onto your computer in literally a few seconds.

I tried this with a couple of different photos and had a lot of fun. Where as you can always turn your photos into black-in white versions of themselves, Wanokota takes it a step further by smudging the picture and giving it the grainy quality you only find in older pictures. The pictures look realistically old, especially so for something that does the job so fast.

While you can do the same thing in Photoshop, this is a great 3 second way to get roughly the same results. Wanokoto is a one stop shop in the respect the aging photos is the one thing you can do there. The site is in Japanese, check out the “English” button on the top right for an English version.

I haven’t seen many photo editing sites out there that are just dedicated to adding one effect to photos. There are plenty of them out there that let you do simple cropping and resizing, as well as some that let you adjust colors, make photos black and white, and that sort of thing.

What photo editing sites do you use? Have you come across any web applications like Wanokoto’s site for editing photographs?
