Recall of PowerShot A650IS issued because of "light leak" problem

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Recall of PowerShot A650IS issued because of "light leak" problem It seems that no camera is immutable and now Canon is under the spotlight because of a “light leak” problem that has affected some of its PowerShot A650IS digital cameras.

The problem occurs when the variangle LCD monitor of the camera is open under sunny skies or bright indoor conditions, where the light shines on the exposed back portion of the camera.

Models affected include PowerShot A650IS cameras that have a zero in the fifth digit of the serial number (xxxx0xxxxx).  Not all of these cameras will require repair.

Those cameras with the affected serial number may have already been repaired, a marking on the inside of the battery cover will indicated whether it has already been repaired and the camera will function normally.

For all other cameras, a free repair will be available through an authorized Canon service center for residents of the US and Puerto Rico.

Canon notes that if the user chooses not to go through with a repair option, the camera can be used normally as long as the LCD remains closed and flush with the back of the camera, which kind of defeats the purpose of the “variangle” feature.
