Canon unleashes the EOS 40D digital SLR

August 21, 2007

EOS40D After heated speculation, some of which was fueled by an Amazon product leak, Canon USA has finally announced its newest digital SLR (DSLR) camera, the EOS 40D.

The new Canon beast is packed with high-resolution image quality, high-speed shooting and, as you would expect, loads of high-end functionality. The Canon EOS 40D is a follow up to the highly successful Canon 20D and 30D EOS models, all of which belongs to Canon’s “prosumer” DSLR product lines.

The Canon 40D’s key features include: 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, 3.0-inch LCD and 6.5 fps shooting capability.

The most noticeable feature of the Canon 40D is the 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor which gives you approximately 10.1 million effective pixels of picture resolutions, which is good enough for a decent standard poster size print. This is a signifcant improvement over the 8.1-megapixel of its predecessor, the Canon 30D.

The Canon 40D sports a 3.0-inch LCD which is half an inch bigger than the Canon 30D’s 2.5-inch LCD. Along with the increase in LCD size, Canon also increased the brightness level, broadened the color gamut and narrowed down the viewing angle to 140-degree perspective. This helps in viewing pictures taken when users are outdoors.

The Canon 40D brags of an increase 6.5 frames per second shooting speed which is good for shooting action and sport scenes. This is by far the fastest shooting speed of any mid-range digital SLR camera.

The Canon 40D DLSR will hit stores worldwide by mid-September. As for the most important question of all, the price?

Amazon has priced the Canon 400 DLSR at $1,300 although there is no word yet from Canon USA as to the SRP.
