Samsung develops hybrid camera/picture frame device

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Samsung develops hybrid camera/picture frame device This has been floating around for the past few weeks and it was time that we got around to it.  Samsung has developed a prototype device that functions as both a digital camera and picture frame.  What’s even more interesting is that it has two displays.

One display is used as the sole viewfinder for the camera, the other display is (presumably) larger and is used when the camera is in “frame” mode so you can view your pictures on what should be a larger (possibly high resolution) display.

For now, it is known as the SS700 and from the casing features 7.2 Megapixel resolution, a 3x Schneider Kreuznach zoom lens and that’s really all that there is on it except that it looks really cool.

Samsung has a knack for developing cool looking cameras with cool features but despite the breed of the lenses it uses produce less than optimal results.  Perhaps this is because Samsung is new to the digital camera market, perhaps it is because they use tiny and poorly made CCD sensors or maybe it’s due to the camera’s processor.

Perhaps a combination of all those but either way, Samsung cameras produce images that are below the quality of its competitors, including Kodak and I don’t think much of Kodak cameras.

It’s really quite sad that Samsung couldn’t produce cameras that take better images because the NV7ops is a very innovative and interesting model.  Perhaps the SS700 can rectify some of its current and past problems.
