All This? In One Camera?
By Shelton Muller
Shelton Muller takes a look at the fabulous new 7 megapixel Ricoh Caplio R6.
The Ricoh Caplio R6 is a camera that combines the ease of use each family wants, but with features and technologies that make great pictures possible.
How is it possible that a camera that is only 20.6mm thick and weighs only 135 grams can have a 7x optical zoom (28-200mm), a 2.7 inch LCD screen and a host of intelligent, new software for sharper and better exposed pictures? No doubt there are some seriously technical answers to those questions, but suffice it to say that the Ricoh Caplio R6 has made them possible. Why do you want these benefits? Lets look at why.
A 7x optical zoom lens from 28mm to 200mm allows you to capture wide-angle landscapes with one click – and then a candid portrait of your children playing in that landscape with the next click. Few cameras of this size will offer you that capability. And Ricoh’s high speed response means no more lost shots because of shutter lag. Those candid shots of your kids we just spoke about? You can get them. You can even capture them in fast action sequences. Then, the large screen will let you see your pictures clearly and quickly.
Ricoh have incorporated Vibration Correction in their latest model also, meaning that in low light situations, your pictures will be sharper if you can’t use flash. The blur that often ruins a picture because of camera shake can be eliminated by Vibration Correction. This is also helpful when you zoom in to capture those candids of the kids we were talking about.
But there is more to this camera than those great things we have mentioned. The Caplio R6 has ‘Face Recognition” technology too. What is that? It is, quite simply, technology that makes sure that if there are faces in your photographs, the Caplio R6 will focus on them and meter for them. No more blurred or lost faces in the darkness. Add to this Ricoh’s new Auto Soft Flash mode and over exposure display, and you can be assured of perfect face photos every time. Because our family photographs rarely exclude those whom we love, these technologies make this camera even more attractive.
The Ricoh Caplio R6 comes complete with a rechargeable long life Lithium Ion Battery and charger, making it easy to capture hundreds of pictures without having to worry about power. You have plenty.
The Ricoh Caplio R6 is now available in Australia from your local photo retailer and is only AU $599.

Further to William’s comment 15/4/07 I also look forward to your comments on th TX1. I would not depreciate the R6, which is a camera I was seriously considering to get a decent zoom in a compact camera, but from what info available on the TX1 this seems potentially closest to my ideal combination of zoom, compact size & quality image. Of course this is just conjecture from what I have read – what is it really like?
